Why 26 January?
Republic Day marks the day the Constitution of India came into effect on 26 January 1950, making India a sovereign democratic republic. The date was chosen because on 26 January 1930 the Indian National Congress had declared Purna Swaraj, complete independence.
The Republic Day parade
The President of India unfurls the national flag in New Delhi, followed by a grand parade on Kartavya Path. Regiments of the armed forces march past, states show colourful tableaux, and fighter jets fly overhead. A foreign head of state is often invited as the chief guest.
Celebrations everywhere
Schools, offices and housing societies hoist the tricolour, sing the national anthem and hold cultural programmes. The celebrations end on 29 January with the Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk.
