What is Maha Shivratri?
Maha Shivratri, "the great night of Shiva", is one of the most important Hindu festivals. It is observed on the fourteenth night of the dark fortnight in the month of Phalguna, and is believed to be the night of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati's divine marriage.
Fasting and night vigil
Devotees fast through the day and stay awake all night chanting "Om Namah Shivaya" and singing bhajans. The Shivling is bathed with milk, water, honey and curd, and offered bel leaves, dhatura and flowers through the four prahars of the night.
Temples and celebrations
The twelve Jyotirlinga temples, including Kashi Vishwanath and Somnath, see enormous crowds. In many places, processions called Shiv Baraat celebrate the wedding of Shiva and Parvati.
