What is Bhai Dooj?
Bhai Dooj is celebrated on the fifth and final day of the Diwali festival. It celebrates the bond between brothers and sisters, much like Raksha Bandhan. In Maharashtra it is called Bhau Beej, and in Bengal it is Bhai Phonta.
The legend
According to legend, Yamraj, the god of death, visited his sister Yamuna on this day. She welcomed him with a tilak and a feast, and he blessed her, declaring that any brother who receives tilak from his sister on this day would be protected.
How it is celebrated
Sisters apply tilak on their brothers' foreheads, perform aarti and pray for their long life. Brothers give gifts in return, and the family shares a festive meal together.
